Nature Grows

The lettuce is growing. The cucumbers are growing - everything is growing.  Tomatoes we are selling.

  1. That's wonderful. You're turning into quite a gardener. Your great grandfather, Max Smydra, used to sell his vegetables, too. He would have an advertisement in the local paper, the Ontonagon Herald. It always listed the fruits and vegetables he wanted to sell. The ads always said "Max Smydra and sons." The sons were your grandfather, John Smydra, and your great uncle, Stanley Smydra.

We've been working in our gardens, too. Yesterday, we rototilled an area out back to make a strawberry patch. Today, we planted 44 strawberry plants. There are three different varieties. We rototilled enough space for twice that many but we ran out of plants. We will order more plants next spring and add to the strawberry patch. We will use the extra space this year to plant cantalope and squash. We went out to the main garden tonight and counted some of our other plants. We have 63 tomato plants, 21 cucumber plants, and 37 pepper plants. We only have 2 varieties of cucumber plants but we have a lot of different varieties of peppers and tomatoes. I still have to transplant the summer squash, the yellow squash, and the zuchanni squash. They are still in the greenhouse.

It's nice to have another gardener in the family. It's in the genes.

  2. So, Ethan,

What's new with the garden? The only thing that's new with mine is ........ WEEDS !!! It's been raining a lot lately so the weeds are growing better than the other plants in the garden. If it doesn't rain tomorrow, I'll start weeding. If I did it all at one time, it would take most of one day. I don't feel like spending a whole day weeding so I'll weed for about an hour a day for the next week - on the days that it doesn't rain!
